Data Center Electrical Engineer - Power Systems

About Verrus

Data centers should be valuable assets to their customers, the grid, and the local community such that we are able to give customers what they want, where they want it, while cities and utilities are actively seeking us to build in their region.

Verrus is a developer of next generation, greenfield hyperscale data centers that flexibly leverage its onsite energy infrastructure (i.e. large scale BESS) through our proprietary technology. This allows Verrus to be a flexible resource to the grid, and provide grid services that facilitate interconnection and the effective procurement of power and carbon free energy, and balance traditional and variable uptime workloads (e.g., AI/ML). Verrus builds and capitalizes its turnkey data centers deeply integrated with energy resources, providing significant advantages over traditional designs.

Verrus is led by industry veterans with experience at the largest data center development companies as well as power & utilities, delivering GWs of data center capacity across four continents in their careers (representing billions of investment).

About Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners

Verrus is backed by Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners. With investment from Alphabet, Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, and Stepstone Group, SIP is a consolidated holding company that builds innovative technology-enabled infrastructure companies and projects that deliver positive social and environmental impact at scale. SIP believes that technology-enabled infrastructure will help to solve some of the world’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.

Following years of research and in collaboration with the Verrus management team, SIP formed Verrus to design, build, and operate the world’s most innovative data centers, leveraging unique technology to develop a scaled project portfolio that delivers significant financial, environmental, and innovation outcomes.

Role

Verrus is looking for a candidate to serve as an Electrical Engineer focused on power system aspects of our novel data center design. You will have an equal focus on MV (medium voltage) power system protection design and system response through simulations as well as experimental work to validate the design choices. Your recommendations will directly influence the electrical design and delivery/field deployment of Verrus’ grid-interactive data center with BESS and microgrid capabilities.

This is a full-time position based out of Verrus’ Mountain View, CA office.

Responsibilities

  • Power System Modeling
    • Create and maintain detailed models of electrical single lines and layouts in power system simulators that will help analyze scenarios like AI/ML fluctuations, faults on the MV system etc.
    • Perform short-circuit, fault analysis, protection and coordination, and arc flash studies (using appropriate tools such as ETAP or SKM) to ensure system safety and reliability for grid connected and off grid operation modes.
  • Testing and Validation: Develop innovative experimental platforms for validating aspects of the design such as protection and coordination schemes in the Verrus lab.
  • Equipment Oversight: Act as the internal resource for medium and low-voltage switchgear, relays, LV breakers, ATS, PQMs, and standby diesel generators.
  • Commissioning: Support the Level 1 through Level 5 commissioning activities for the power system for new facility builds.
  • Cross-Functional collaboration:
    • Work with the controls engineers to analyze impact of SOOs on the data center power system and recommend changes for handling contingencies such as electrical faults, loss of communication to a relay, inoperable breaker, etc.
    • Work with the software and network engineering team at Verrus for integration of critical electrical equipment into the facilities network and building SCADA.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or a related field.
  • Experience: 5+ years in power systems engineering, specifically within mission‑critical environments (data centers, hospitals, or semiconductor fabs).
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in ETAP, SKM, or PSSE.
    • Designing and implementing protection schemes using digital relays and breakers.
  • Communication: Ability to translate complex electrical concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering with 5+/3+ years in power systems engineering, specifically within mission‑critical environments. (data centers, hospitals, or semiconductor fabs).
  • Designed and implemented IEC 61850 (sampled values, GOOSE, MMS) based electrical protection systems on industry‑standard relay hardware (SEL, Siemens etc).
  • Prior experience on power system aspects of distributed energy resources integration such as BESS, PV etc for microgrid projects (IEEE 1547, 2800, 2030.7).

Compensation

The annual base salary range for this position in California is $140,000‑$180,000. Salary is only one part of Verrus’ comprehensive compensation package, which also includes a discretionary bonus, equity, general health benefits and paid time off. Compensation is determined by multiple factors, including market location, and may vary based on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience.
