What You Will Do
PRRO is seeking a Project-Program Director 4 to manage LANL's Heat Source Design Agency. LANL is responsible for manufacturing Pu-238 heat sources used in radioisotope power systems for space exploration and national security missions. The Design Agency is responsible for the heat source design and definition to ensure the products meet all quality and flight safety requirements. The successful candidate will be a part of the Design Agency team responsible for owning, reviewing, updating, and maintaining product design definitions, drawings, and specifications. The candidate will be required to work well in a small team environment yet interact frequently with stakeholders such as the Production Agency and Quality organizations.
As the Heat Source Design Agency Program Director, you will:
- Lead and manage the Heat Source Design Agency projects. Ensure completion of all required activities and milestones for multiple programs. Ensure all reporting, scheduling, and budget expectations are being met for the team's work packages.
- Manage the personnel associated with the Design Agency. Partner with the staff to ensure tasking completion across the current and emerging programs. Assist staff with identifying and executing development opportunities within or related to their current work scope. Manage performance reviews, salary exercises, and personnel-related approvals.
- Participate as a design engineer in developing new designs, qualifying new processes/procedures, adjudicating nonconformances, and producing technical documentation and correspondence.
- Collaborate with Production Agency and Quality Assurance personnel to ensure products meet high-quality, functionality, and flight-safety requirements.
- Collaborate with program managers, line management, and National Laboratory partners to ensure design intent is being communicated and maintained.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements
- Leadership: Demonstrated leadership in tactical planning and providing direction for integration and execution of one or more multidisciplinary portfolios.
- Program Management: Strong experience managing work scope, schedules, budgets, and funding for program/project work, priorities, and performance milestones. Experience managing the interface with program, project, and line management to ensure performance and monitor and track cost, schedule, and progress against milestones.
- Personnel Management Experience: Experience managing staff in the planning, tracking, and execution of program/project plans.
- Collaboration and Communication: Demonstrated ability to facilitate work across organizations and with different external partners to advance and integrate work in a multi-program, multi-organization environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical personnel. Experience developing and delivering briefings, presentations, and documents for internal and external stakeholders.
- Technical Experience: In-depth knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the technical or operational discipline related to heat source design and production.
- Clearance: The ability to obtain a "Q" clearance which typically requires U.S. citizenship.
- Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A degree in engineering or applicable physical science (e.g., physics, materials science) is preferred.
Desired Qualifications
- Line Management Experience: Experience in multiple aspects of personnel management, including but not limited to: managing headcount, forecasting and budget(s) associated with group, directing assignments, employee hiring and onboarding processes, providing continuous performance management and feedback to further develop staff, and ensuring proper team recognition and appreciation.
- Design/Production Agency Experience: Demonstrated experience working with Design and Production Agencies and/or Product Realization Teams.
- Technical Experience: Familiarity with Pu-238 Heat Source manufacturing or other space programs.
Work Location
The work location for this position is fully onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
