About this Job


This is a fulltime position located at the State Capitol Welcome Center in Baton Rouge, LA.

This position is responsible for providing guided tours of the Louisiana State Capitol to individuals and groups. They are also responsible for advising guests on attractions, lodging, and dining resources throughout the state to encourage guests to experience everything that Louisiana has to offer. Foreign language skills absolutely a plus. Friendly, outgoing, knowledgeable about Louisiana history, and architecture. Additionally, tour guides are expected to be able to manage tour groups as large as 120 students and must be proficient public speaker. This position requires an independent worker who can make real time decisions to facilitate good group experiences. Available weekends. An ideal candidate will have at least one year of customer service experience. This position may also attend fairs, festivals, and trade shows in support of the Louisiana Office of Tourism mission.

Job Duties and Other Information


Job Duties:

  • Gives innovative and engaging tours of the State Capitol and capitol grounds to school groups, dignitaries, and all manner of visitors.
  • Meets and greets the general traveling public, welcoming them to Louisiana.
  • Provides general and detailed information (including directions) on attractions, tours, restaurants, parks, museums, events, and other places of interest to visitors of Louisiana.
  • Offers and distributes maps and brochures to visitors and makes sure all brochure racks are well stocked.
  • Works with other travel counselors and supervisors to secure reliable information on current activities, festivals, attractions, lodging, restaurants, and other tourism related businesses, and to generally increase knowledge of the state.
  • Works with others travel counselors and the supervisor to continually compile, file, and update reference materials, and utilizes the internet responsibly in order to increase the resources available to find answers to visitors' unusual questions.
  • Attends and participates in job safety training, position and center specific training, and other courses that may be required or recommended, including but not limited to: customer service, harassment, blood borne pathogens, and driver safety.
  • Receives requests for State Capitol tours by email and phone.
  • Schedules tours in Outlook and desk calendar.
  • Must demonstrate and utilize advanced computer skills and knowledge of a wide range of general and proprietary software, Office Suite, Outlook (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail, and others) usage of a wide variety of online forms and internet portals. Must demonstrate and exemplify responsible usage of the internet.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays, evenings, and be accessible/available in an emergency.
  • Performs other duties, accepts additional responsibilities as assigned and delegated.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This is a probational appointment; current classified permanent status state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.

Work Schedule: The State Capitol Welcome Center is open to the public from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday-Sunday. This position may be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, evenings and/or travel.

Career Progression: This position is in a Career Progression Group to a Tourism Information Counselor 3. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Tourism Information Counselor 1, 2, or 3 based on the qualifications of the selected applicant.
